As Olivia rounded the curve in the road along the waterfront, the yellow building the police station was housed in came into view. Seemed like a prime location, from a real estate perspective, so close to the water, just up from the Coast Guard Station. The Coast Guard being there, she understood. But the police? The lot, alone, where the cruisers were parked, would fetch a sizable price if it were ever sold to a developer. But the station had been there for so long, no one questioned it. That was just the way it was.

Her back stiffened. It was never a pleasant visit when she stopped in. This one would be no exception. Pulling to the curb, up the street, Olivia hopped out and strode back toward the station. She burst through the front door, not intending to sugarcoat her ordeal. No one manned the counter, but through the frosted glass she could see Barnes was in her office and appeared to have someone across the desk from her.

Parking her backside against the counter, Olivia folded her arms across her body, tapping one toe against the other, marking time. Before long, a familiar voice sounded behind her.

“Is this what you’re looking for?”

Olivia turned to face Barnes who was holding up a wallet—hers.

“Wha—? Where’d you get that?”

“This was picked up in the parking lot at Izzie’s this morning.” The captain raised a brow and flared a nostril, like a mother catching her teenager telling a lie. “Wild time last night, Olivia? Didn’t figure out you’d lost your wallet until this morning when you woke up in an alcohol-induced haze?”

Olivia pulled back from her. “Nothing like that at all.” Feeling conflicted between her relief at getting her wallet back and Barnes’ hurtful presumption, she snatched her lavender-colored billfold and peeked inside.

“Anything missing?”

“No. Everything seems to be here.”

“Yeah, we were surprised it still had cash and credit cards in it. Figured you’d dropped it and got lucky the right person found it.”

“Look, it’s not what you think. I went to Izzie’s last night, but I never made it inside. I got grabbed by two men in the parking lot. I must have had this in my hand when they pulled me out of the car.” She held up her wallet.

“Grabbed?”

“Yeah. The big guy literally pulled me out of my car.” Glancing down, she noticed the rip on the front of her shirt and poked a finger through it. “Great.”

“So, what happened?” Barnes almost sounded genuinely interested, leaning her forearms on the counter.

“I had just pulled into the parking spot. I don’t even know if I’d turned off the car. Next thing I know, the driver’s side door pops open, and this huge hand was pulling me out by my shirt.”

“A big guy? Black?”

Olivia laughed. “Yeah, that narrows it down, doesn’t it?” Barnes didn’t engage in her amusement. “There were two guys. The big one’s name was Vin. He was definitely calling the shots. The other guy—also black, but much smaller—was taking the orders.
